Short Trips

Camping Shakedown

Since we have a long trip coming up to Belgium and camping almost every night, we thought a shakedown ride is a good idea. Pack up the bikes heavy with gear, ride a few small hills, and see how it all goes. So, we planned to ride to Riedenburg, camp there, then ride to Regensburg and take the train home. We started after work on a Friday, but it was late, so we had some evening darkness to manage. When we arrived in Riedenburg, very tired and untrained, the campsite was closed. So we quietly rode around, picked a spot, set up the tent, and crashed. The following day we were up early for camp coffee, but the office didn’t open until 10:00, so we just left. It felt very sneaky. The following week we sent 20€ by post with a note. So, it all worked out.

The second day was lovely. We have ridden this route several times and know the ups and downs, so that was good. We could focus on the bikes and the gear and not worry about where to go or follow the GPS so closely. When you get closer to Regensburg, life along the trail starts to pick up. There are skaters and runners, people taking a sneaky dip in the river, some boats cruising along, plus a ferry crossing that is a popular meeting point. Visit Regensburg! It’s a super fun city and cool to hang about. Whether in the center or by the river, there is always something going on.
