Gravel madness! 30 km of awesome gravel tracks, up and down, plus nice smooth bike lanes deep in the forest. We had it all today on an energetic ride with exciting hills and beautiful vistas.
Of course, the route had the mountains and the river and the villages, but today’s ride had a spark. We felt fast and energetic, pacing up the short hills, and running around the gravel corners. Perhaps we’re fitter?
Sadly, we saw more than a few dried up streams and lake beds. Perhaps that’s a normal thing here in July, but it appears to be extraordinary.
Riding in this area, through valley after valley each day, one gets a feeling living here would mean a slower kind of life, and that’s very appealing. But, there is more going happening besides agriculture or timber. We’ve seen a thriving arts community in almost every village and town, showing interesting projects and pieces, and many business catering to outdoor sports, like cycling (of course).
Spittal an der Drau is a well-connected, vibrant place where weekend hiking and cycling seems to be very popular. The town has a series of interconnected meeting squares, with many restaurants and bars that spill out into the streets with large seating areas.
Of course, all this cuteness here comes at a price since nothing opens before 9:00, so most of the town is getting its morning coffee at McDonald’s.
